As a Director of Mission Advancement & Community Relations, you will be supporting and conveying the achievement of the Goodwill mission through all avenues of internal and external communication. Activities include, but are not limited to, building relationships with local Goodwill communities, public speaking, coordinating and implementing fundraising events, developing a volunteer network, grant writing support, brand management, developing, maintaining, and updating the agency website, utilizing social and traditional media, developing creative marketing materials for donated goods retail, mission services and the agency, and developing and implementing other activities, promotions, and programs that enhance the public image and support of Goodwill Industries.

Essential Responsibilities:

1.) Serve as a business partner with Donated Goods Retail and Mission Services to achieve strategic organizational goals, objectives, and metrics.

2.) Establish and cultivate philanthropic partnerships with corporations, businesses, elected officials, non-profit organizations, foundations, schools, civic organizations, churches, scouts, media, etc. for the purpose of advancing the mission of Goodwill throughout our territory. Develop creative marketing materials as needed to support the relationships and maximize earned media via traditional and social media outlets. Examples include donation drives, outreach programs, fundraisers, etc.

3.) Create and implement a comprehensive and consistent community relations/marketing process and message on behalf of Goodwill including, but not limited to, public speaking, agency tours, website development and maintenance, social media content, email blasts, internal and external newsletters and e-newsletters, blogs, coordinating advertising, PSAs, and human interest stories with traditional media sources, developing retail advertising, designing annual reports, brochures, flyers, donation receipts, signage, certificates, and other printed documents for agency programs and services.

4.) Provide public relations assistance including grant-writing and other fund-raising campaigns for the Evansville Goodwill Industries Foundation upon request.

5.) Generate annual calendar of events and prepare for and manage retail, fundraising, and mission related promotions/campaigns and special events as well as online promotional content. Examples include Goodwill Industries Week activities, Thrift Day, Giving Tuesday, customer appreciation celebrations, employer recognition events, store openings, open houses, etc.

6.) Generate earned media by seeking public interest stories within Goodwill (stories behind the stores) and pitching them regularly to local media.

7.) Coordinate and implement special fundraising events to achieve established fundraising objectives. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Solicit and build relationships with current and new sponsors to maximize sponsorship revenue.
  • Maximize and coordinate advertising (donated and social media), including copywriting and production, with TV and radio and coordinate design with print media (newspaper and billboard).
  • Incorporate mission related human interest stories to maximize earned media.
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate adequate number of volunteers to meet needs of event.
  • Solicit participants of event via social media, traditional media, and other methods as appropriate to maximize event revenue.
  • Design outreach materials, prepare and coordinate mailings.
  • Coordinate media activities by preparing press kits, press releases, print ads, etc.
  • Maintain records of participants, sponsors, and other relevant data.
  • Represent Goodwill through radio and TV appearances.
  • Coordinate activities on day of event taking all necessary precautions to minimize risk and assure the safety of all participants, volunteers, and workers.
  • Work cooperatively with other team members to maximize publicity and revenue.
  • Minimize expenses by seeking in-kind and cash donations.
  • Analyze event budget compared to actual expenses, revenue, and net revenue and seek ways to improve net results year over year.

8.) Responsible for maintaining retail brand standards and signage consistency through regular visits to stores and donation centers and collaboration with Donated Goods Retail team, while identifying any new signage/promotional needs. Design, manufacture, and distribute retail, pricing and donation center signage. Manage signage inventory and oversee management of marketing storage space and supplies.

9.) Track monthly social media engagement and analytics reports to measure the impact of social media activity.

10.) Maintain a database/tracking system to evaluate success of events and donation drives, and maintain donor data base

11.) Handle complaints from the public and communicate them to the President and appropriate members of the executive team for resolution. Generate quarterly report of complaints including resolution.

12.) Maintain a working knowledge of Evansville Goodwill Industries’ programs and services and serve as primary point of contact for media relations. Notify President of all media inquiries.

13.) Develop, schedule and coordinate employee enrichment and support events such as mammograms, PSA tests, etc.

14.) Participate on leadership teams, such as CARF, crisis, etc.

15.) Perform other duties as assigned.


1.) Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Significant relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the degree.

2.) Minimum of two years of public relations, fund-raising, networking and marketing experience required.

3.) Must have strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

4.) Experience with WordPress, Microsoft Office Suite, GSuite products, iOS and Android operating systems, Adobe Creative Suite products (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) or similar design programs, Cloud-based storage systems, database management, internet resources, and virtual communication platforms (i.e. Zoom, FaceTime, etc.).

5.) Must be a strong team player who is willing to support and interact well with external and internal teams alike and be able to work effectively as part of a team or independently.

6.) Effective written and verbal communication skills.

7.) Attention to details in all facets of work.

8.) Ability to identify and plan for potential risks. Practice safety provisions to prevent injury to self and others.

9.) Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, as assigned.

10.) Ability to make a professional impression in civic, social, and business contacts.

11.) Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and reliable transportation. Regular travel within Evansville Goodwill Industries, Inc.’s territory is required.

12.) Provide police background report.

13.) Submit to pre-employment and random drug screens.
