Showing all frequently asked questions.

01 What items can Evansville Goodwill not accept?

To keep our team members, donors, and communities safe, some items cannot be accepted due to safety, environmental, legal, or disposal requirements.
These items include:

  • Mattresses
  • Box springs
  • Chemicals and Paint

You can contact your nearest donation center before bringing a large or unusual item. We appreciate the care our donors put into giving and helping make our mission possible!

02 Why are items priced the way they are if everything is donated?

While the items we sell are generously donated, there are costs to collect, sort, prepare, and sell them. Our team members earn a starting wage of at least $13 per hour, and revenue from our stores fund programs like The Excel Center® Evansville Southeast, where it costs about $10,500 to help a student reach graduation.

In fact, $0.82 of every dollar spent in our stores supports our people, programs, and mission. Every purchase helps turn donated goods into opportunities right here in our communities.

03 Where do my donations go?

Your donations stay at work in our local communities. Usable items are prepared for sale in one of our 16 stores, where purchases help fund education, employment, and other programs across the tristate.

Items we can’t sell are reused, salvaged, or recycled whenever possible, helping keep materials out of landfills. It’s all part of the Cycle of Good your donations make possible.

04 Does Evansville Goodwill pick up donations or vehicles?

Yes! Evansville Goodwill offers home donation pickup for qualifying items in select ZIP codes. Outside our current service area? You’re still welcome to submit an inquiry, and our team will review your request based on location, scheduling, and capacity.

We also accept vehicle donations through Goodwill’s vehicle donation program. Use the options below to get started.

05 Are Evansville Goodwill’s programs really free?

Yes! Evansville Goodwill’s programs are offered at no cost to participants. That includes The Excel Center®, GoodSkills Academy, Opportunity Services, and other programs designed to help people learn, work, and move toward greater independence.

So how are they free? Your donations and purchases help cover the cost. Every time you donate or shop at Evansville Goodwill, you help make these opportunities available to people across our communities.

06 How do I get a tax receipt for my donation?

Just ask a donation attendant for a receipt when you drop off your items. Be sure to keep it for your records and add a description and value of the items you donated.

Evansville Goodwill cannot determine the value of donated items. For questions about tax deductions or documentation, we recommend consulting a qualified tax professional.

07 What are your store and donation center hours?

Most Evansville Goodwill retail stores are open 9 a.m.–8 p.m. daily, with donation doors open 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily.

Hours may differ by store and donation center and can change for holidays or special circumstances.

Visit our store locations page for current hours, addresses, and contact information.

08 How is Evansville Goodwill connected to Goodwill Industries International?

Evansville Goodwill is an independent, local 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a member of Goodwill Industries International. We are locally governed and operated, serving 28 counties across Southern Indiana, Southeastern Illinois, and Western Kentucky.

Our connection to Goodwill Industries International gives us access to national resources, best practices, and the Goodwill network, but the donations and purchases made here support our local organization and mission. When you support Evansville Goodwill, you’re supporting your neighbors and communities right here at home.

09 Is Evansville Goodwill a nonprofit organization?

Yes! Evansville Goodwill is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has served our region since 1935. Revenue from our stores helps employ local team members, operate our organization, and fund programs that help people learn, work, and thrive.

10 Where does the money from Goodwill stores go?

When you shop at Evansville Goodwill, your purchase does more. Store revenue supports our local team members and operations while helping fund education, employment, and other programs that serve our communities.

12 Does Evansville Goodwill pay employees with disabilities less than minimum wage?

No. Evansville Goodwill does not pay employees less because they have a disability. Our entry-level retail positions start at $13 per hour, with higher wages for positions with greater responsibilities.

We believe in creating meaningful employment opportunities where people of all abilities can contribute, grow, and succeed.

13 Does Evansville Goodwill employ people with disabilities?

Yes. Evansville Goodwill is committed to creating an inclusive workplace and opportunities for people of all abilities. In fact, helping people overcome barriers to employment has been part of our work since Goodwill was founded in 1902.

14 Why doesn’t Goodwill just give donated items away for free?

Because selling donated goods is what helps make our mission possible. Revenue from our stores helps employ local team members, operate our organization, and fund programs that are offered at no cost to the people we serve.

Your donated items become much more than something on a shelf. They become opportunities for people throughout our communities.

15 Why do some donated items not make it to the sales floor?

We want donated items to have the best possible next life, but not everything we receive can be sold in our stores. Items may be unsuitable for sale because of their condition, safety requirements, or other factors.

Whenever possible, items that can’t be sold are directed to reuse, salvage, or recycling channels rather than going to waste.

16 What happens to items that don’t sell?

An item’s journey doesn’t necessarily end if it doesn’t sell in one of our stores. Whenever possible, unsold goods are given additional opportunities for reuse, salvage, or recycling, starting with our Outlet store where items are sold by the pound.

Our goal is to get the most value and use possible from the donations entrusted to us while keeping usable materials in circulation.

17 Do my donations stay local?

We do our best to sell donations in the communities where they’re received. At times, we may move items between Evansville Goodwill stores to help ensure smaller communities have a strong selection of donated goods.

No matter which of our stores sells your donation, the funds generated stay within Evansville Goodwill’s 28-county territory, supporting our local operations, programs, and mission.

18 How does shopping at Goodwill help the community?

Shopping at Evansville Goodwill is another way to give back. Revenue from your purchases helps employ local team members and fund education, employment, and other programs that help people across our communities.

So when you find something good, you’re helping do something good, too.

19 Who can use Evansville Goodwill’s programs?

Evansville Goodwill’s programs are offered at no cost, with some, including Opportunity Services, available to anyone in the community. Other programs may have specific eligibility requirements, like The Excel Center Evansville Southeast or Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).
