Need to Know
Frequently Asked Questions.
Find quick answers to common questions about shopping, donating, and how your purchases support Evansville Goodwill’s local mission.
01 Where does the money from Goodwill stores go?
When you shop at Evansville Goodwill, your purchase
does more. Store revenue supports our local team
members and operations while helping fund education,
employment, and other programs that serve our
communities.
In fact, $0.82 of every dollar spent in our
stores supports our people, programs, and
mission. That’s why every purchase is part
of our Cycle of Good.
02 How does shopping at Goodwill help the community?
Shopping at Evansville Goodwill is another way to give
back. Revenue from your purchases helps employ local
team members and fund education, employment, and other
programs that help people across our communities.
So when you find something good, you’re helping do
something good, too.
03 What can I find at an Evansville Goodwill store?
Evansville Goodwill stores offer a constantly changing
selection of donated goods, including clothing, home
goods, books, furniture, accessories, and more.
Because inventory is based on donations from our
communities, every visit is different and there’s
always something new to discover.
04 What is the Goodwill Outlet?
The Goodwill Outlet offers a different kind of
thrifting experience. Merchandise is presented in
rotating bins, giving shoppers the opportunity to
search through a wide variety of items and discover
new finds throughout the day.
Many items are sold by the pound, and the Outlet also
gives donated merchandise another opportunity to be
reused, helping extend the useful life of items and
keep more goods in circulation.
05 Can I donate items when I visit a Goodwill store?
Yes. Evansville Goodwill retail locations offer convenient donation drop-off areas, making it easy to donate and shop during the same trip.
Learn About Donating06 Do my donations and purchases stay local?
We do our best to sell donations in the communities
where they’re received. At times, we may move items
between Evansville Goodwill stores to help ensure
smaller communities have a strong selection of
donated goods.
No matter which of our stores sells your donation, the
funds generated stay within Evansville Goodwill’s
28-county territory, supporting our local operations,
programs, and mission.
07 What happens to items that don’t sell?
An item’s journey doesn’t necessarily end if it
doesn’t sell in one of our stores. Whenever possible,
unsold goods are given additional opportunities for
reuse, salvage, or recycling, starting with our Outlet
store where items are sold by the pound.
Our goal is to get the most value and use possible
from the donations entrusted to us while keeping
usable materials in circulation.
08 Why do some donated items not make it to the sales floor?
We want donated items to have the best possible next
life, but not everything we receive can be sold in our
stores. Items may be unsuitable for sale because of
their condition, safety requirements, or other
factors.
Whenever possible, items that can’t be sold are
directed to reuse, salvage, or recycling channels
rather than going to waste.
09 Why doesn’t Goodwill just give donated items away for free?
Because selling donated goods is what helps make our
mission possible. Revenue from our stores helps employ
local team members, operate our organization, and fund
programs that are offered at no cost to the people we
serve.
Your donated items become much more than something on
a shelf. They become opportunities for people
throughout our communities.
